Markham has beeen traveling alot. He has had the Meekers on his mind. He can recall their graces and courtesies on his behalf. His engagement in Chattanooga gave Markham the pivot of a platform in that merdian. He discusses an investment in City Services. He is anxious to finish his work.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
